Hello LiveJournal! it's been a while! *waves sheepishly*

I haven't posted on here for ages and i'd really like to get back into it (Tumblr is a lonely place and also a ground for bullying) i was thinking i might do another more up to date "about me" type meme thing at some point and try maybe to post at least once a week!!

But that's not why i'm here, im here because of supergirl!!!! oh yes!! i am over excited about it! OVER EXCITED!! i'm like a child!!

SG3.jpg

I watched the first episode of Supergirl again (yes again) and I still love it!! I nearly wet myself when the 6 minute first look was released and I nearly wet myself again when I heard the first episode had been leaked.
As no one I know seems to be at all interested in it I’m writing down what I think, just to get it out!
So here’s what I thought!

- I love Kara
- I love the pushing up of her glasses when she lands on the roof!
- Love the super hearing
- Love the flying
- Love the heat vision (and the after effect)
- Love the funny red boots at the bank robbery
- Love the flying
- Love the cape
- Love it!
- Superman dropped his cousin off at the Danvers’ and never went back? Never checked on her?
- How did those poison darts get through her skin?
- How does the DEO know so much about Kara and her pod. And about Fort Ras (I don’t know how you spell that!)? How did they know about Kara being Alex’s sister?
- Hank is a bit of a dick
- Not feeling Winn
- Why only say ‘Superman’ once?
- How does the DEO analyse the axe the bad guy has?
- The whole “I’m not gay” bit…….. you know in the comics she kinda falls for a woman, kinda sorta, okay so she fell for a flying horse looking person Comet who is actually a woman who transforms into Comet! So y’know as a story that could be explored!
- Is it part of the tv universe or the movie universe? Because if it’s tv then superman has been flying around for 20 years and no one has mentioned it. If it’s the film universe then does that mean no cross overs! :( (although if it’s the tv universe they can cast their own supes!)

What I’d like to see in the series:

- Flashbacks to when she was younger with Helen Slater and Dean Cain (they need to be in it more!) learning about her powers
- More nervous Kara when she’s around Jimmy
- Can we have Kara be friends with some women? Not just her sister? Not just Winn? How about a geek from the Deo (kinda like Simmons in agents of shield)
- Can they explain how Kara and Winn know each other? Do they just work together? The “super friends” bit makes it sounds like they’ve known each other for a while
- Can we have Kara doing normal everyday superhero things like help with car crashes or cats up trees? Not just all the evil aliens?

so, that's it, now to decide whether to post this on tumblr.........

Yay, I watched it to!
The red boots!
Yes to more Dean Cain!
Also now I need an epic AU where she didn't in fact crash 24 years after her cousin but she was able to fulfill her mission to protect him as she was meant to. And *she* becomes this big great hero Kal/Clark looks up to.
Also I love how they built her relationship with her mother (how the bad guys want revenge on her mother, not her father) and how the big bad is another woman (her aunt no less), quite a change from the usual father/son relationship stuff...

yay!! :D
i reckon she had them laying around in her cupboard and now had an opportunity to use them!! haha!!
i think they would both be great! helen slater is lovely too!
that would be an awesome AU..... i don't know if DC have even done that one!! (surely they must of somewhere along the way!!)
I hope that the kryptonian box alex gave Kara is abit like clarks fortrice of solitude crystals in the film, so that kara can see her mum and her mum can help her out! :D
I hope they carry on with the more female centric stuff like that with her mum and/or aunt!

i have read a lot of supergirl stuff and i have to say it doesn't ring any bells, and that kind of story would be right up my street! you would have thought someone at DC would have thought of that!

Can i ask slightly related question? Do you not like the look of DC stuff? or have you read some and don't like it? or do you sort of only know Marvel through the films? i'm only asking out of curiosity as a lot of newer (im assuming you may be new to comics, please tell me if im wrong) comics fans only seem to buy/read marvel. i work in a comics shop and that seems to be a trend! :D

i am just curious

/Do you not like the look of DC stuff?/ - Yes, that's exactly my problem. Like, I tried to tackle DC comics time after time, always ending up convinced it wasn't for me. For example, the police being left to fend for themselves after the abandonment of the government was one of the things I loved most about TDKR so I gave the famous “No Man’s Land” a try but while the story was intriguing enough it lost me when it started introducing increasingly insane characters doing insane stuff. It was too gritty for me I think and the grey-scale style didn't help things any. I have since successfully enjoyed some Wonder Woman: I loved "JLA - A League Of One". I haven't had time since but I have "Gods of Gotham", "The Hiketeia" and Greg Rucka’s and Gail Simone’s runs ready to be read (since that seems to be the good stuff), as well as the famous "Gotham Central", hopefully I won't be disappointed.
/or do you sort of only know Marvel through the films?/ - Oh, no, I'm a comic geek*. In fact, most of my enjoyment of the movies comes from seeing how things got adapted from comics (while being in Marvel fandom allows me the sheer fun of being able to choose and pick which bit of comic-verse and movie-verse canon to use/combine/transform).

*= Though I can't give you a precise time-line: I remember enjoying Marvel comics around 2008, immersing myself in the awesome Civil War era, and coming out of it a rabid Avengers fan. But before that I read some X-Men stuff, some Spider-Man and Fantastic Four too. (My love for X-Men coming straight from the 80's cartoon LOL)

I can understand all of that i enjoyed No Man's Land, maybe i knew the characters a bit more (as i would say at the time i was far more DC)
I would recomend reading anything Greg Rucka has done, he is one of my faves!! Gotham Central is meant to be great, i have read some of it but not all!

most of my enjoyment of the movies comes from seeing how things got adapted from comics This is alot of my enjoyment of the films too! so far i have not been to disappointed either!! (really im never disappointed with superheroes films except perhaps X-men 3 but then i decided that film doesnt exist!!lol!)

That x-men cartoon was epic!! :D
sorry for assuming and thanks for answering!

/I would recomend reading anything Greg Rucka has done, he is one of my faves!!/ - Oh, good to know! Any particular recs besides Wonder Woman? *g*
/really im never disappointed with superheroes films except perhaps X-men 3 but then i decided that film doesnt exist!!lol!/ - As we all did LOL. Actually I tend to get disappointed sometimes (like, shall we talk about my very conflicted feelings about AOU?) but it's OK, that's another reason why fandom is so great after all: there's nothing too "wrong" in canon that a good dose of fandom can't fix after all... :D

/That x-men cartoon was epic!! :D/ - I still remember the (Italian) intro song. And Jubilee was made of awesome with her yellow coat and Rogue being badass! *g*

/sorry for assuming and thanks for answering!/ - LOL, no problem!

Greg rucka is currently doing a series called Lazarus for image which is one of my faves at the minute, its a sort of distopian future where families rule the world not governments and they all have a lazarus who can regenerate and stuff to protect them! I love it!! He also did a batwoman story called elegy that was also great!! Oh and he also did one called stumptown which i enjoyed!

I quite like that x-men days of future past also erased x3!! Thought that was pretty hilarious! :)

I dont think age of ultron was their best film but i was watchable! There was too much distruction in it for my liking!!

That cartoon got me hooked on rogue!! :) have you see the behind the scenes pics from age of apocalypse with jubilee in a yellow jacket? That made my fangirl heart happy! :)

LOL, I think Lazarus is one of those titles waiting in my to-read folder. Awesome, I didn't realize it was Rucka's, I just keep collecting interesting things to read via recommendations. Oh, Batwoman, awesome!
And, yes, the fact that DOFP erased X3 was one of the things that endeared it to me the most.
What bothered me about AOU was Clint's characterization (a family man with a farm?) and Natasha's out-of-the-blue relationship with Bruce (not to mention how they dealt with her past), plus it generally seemed so... disjointed (I'm actually looking forward to the dvd's release and the director's cut, hopefully it will make more sense.) Sigh, it's just, I adored the first Avengers film and I had such high hopes for AoU. They were too high I guess...
/have you see the behind the scenes pics from age of apocalypse with jubilee in a yellow jacket?/ - OMG, yes. And I'm so excited about Sophie Turner playing Jean too!

I would recommend it definately, Forever is a great character and there is talk of it being turned into a tv show which could be awesome!!

I wasn't that fussed about clints family, i thought it was a nice change and also i believe he has a family in the ultimate universe stories (also i quite like the lady who plays his wife!) i thought the natasha/bruce thing was ridiculous, i liked that she calmed the hulk but i don't think the relationship needed to turn romantic for them to 'run away together'

I hope the new x-men is good, im sure i'll love it anyway and the younger new x-men (jean jubilee, scott, nightwing angel etc) will be good to see and interesting!!

Yes, but I was told Ultimates was terrible so I never read it and damn it, I'm just too fond of Fraction's version where he can't take care of his dog, let alone a wife and two kids.
/i thought the natasha/bruce thing was ridiculous, i liked that she calmed the hulk but i don't think the relationship needed to turn romantic for them to 'run away together'/ - I had to read a lot of very intelligent meta to come to term with that bit of canon but, yes, I would have preferred to save myself the headache. :D Also, how come of the three canon relationships Natasha had in the comics (with Matt Murdock, Clint Barton and Bucky Barnes) Joss goes with Bruce Banner? The comics purist in me is kind of irked... :D (The Bucky/Nat shipper too LOL)
Yes, I'm very excited about the new X-Men film too.
Also, if you think about it, with the fact that Marvel rights are distributed among three different studios, each year they get three as many films as DC. No wonder Marvel comics are more popular than DC's... ;)

I only read some of the ultimate x-men storris so i don't really know, but at least it is some sort of canon!!

I'm sort of the mind that Natasha doesn't need a bloody relationship!! none of the others really have that in the story so why should she? but yeah why pick him if anyone?

there may be more films but i would prefer to have them all in the same universe, it annoys me that they are defending new york from aliens and spiderman isn't there, or the fantastic four, or that wolverine or rogue aren't in the avengers or that scarlet witch and quicksilver aren't magneto's kids and they aren't mutants. i'd rather that than more films!!
Marvel is "more popular" than DC because they pander more (or maybe have a better connection with fandom, although i think that's pushing it) to fads that people want. just my opinion though!

/or that scarlet witch and quicksilver aren't magneto's kids/ - I know!! If there's an alien invasion I'd expect the X-Men and the FF to join en mass in the defence effort too. *shakes head*
The real shame is that Marvel Studios will never ever again get back the rights for the X-Men... :(
So, yes, you could say I'm as bitter as you are about the lack of crossover potential but I'm trying to look at the brighter side of things!
Also, isn't Spider-Man at least is sort-of returning to the fold? :D
I really think all this visibility was a factor in the popularity Marvel is enjoying right now.
Marvel panders more to the public? What do you mean?

Oh, I only read the Ultimate version of the X-Men too (the only Ultimate comics I ever read, actually). Good stuff.

/I'm sort of the mind that Natasha doesn't need a bloody relationship!!/ - LOL, of course she doesn't. Should she want one my partner of choice would be Bucky though.. :D

(sorry for the delay i had someone staying with me and couldn't really get online!)

There is a possiblity that they might get the rights back or at least share them like they are going to do with Spiderman!? I can't remember how spidey is going to be involved with the avengers but he is/was a part of the civil war comic so it could be that!?

yes, the saturation of marvel films is a major part of why they are popular, there is no denying that. but that doesn't mean they have better or even good stories going on at the minute.
Now this is probably going to make me sound maybe bitter, maybe jaded, maybe old! but i think Marvel are pandering to their popularity. In a business sense it's a great idea and is to a point working, but as a fan and collector i don't think it will last. They aren't making comics for female readers because they care about female readers they are doing it for money, they see a new money making opportunity and they are going for it. which is great if you are a business but few of those titles will last. Elektra and she-hulk have already been cancelled, i can see sqirrel-girl going soon, i can't imagine Silk lasting too long either. I don't think that this marvel film bubble will last forever, i think the majority or young people who are "comic fans" will move on as soon as they find something new so Marvel needs to not alienate the older comic fans who have stuck with them through thick and thin! But like i said this is just my opinion and probably not a popular one! I should just say that i am not against Marvel at all and i do like some of there new stuff, spider-gwen, black widow both good. And also i think Marvel fans on the internet (tumblr) are generally incredibly arragant and insular and need to calm the fuck down. I'm a COMIC fan i'll read anything by any publisher that catches my eye, but some marvel people don't like stuff just because it's not marvel and i find that ridiclous!. (if any of that makes sense!!)

LOL, I'm sorry for the late reply too.

/There is a possiblity that they might get the rights back or at least share them like they are going to do with Spiderman!?/ - Twenty Century Fox and Marvel Studios seems to be really at odds so I wouldn't bet on it... *shakes head*
/I can't remember how spidey is going to be involved with the avengers/ - Sony and Marvel Studios struck a deal. The last Spider-Man movies where a bit of a flop so Sony was hoping to improve things by having Spider-Man join the rest of the MCU, that is going very strong at the moment, money-wise.

/but that doesn't mean they have better or even good stories going on at the minute/ - I agree there are non Marvel comics out there like Saga that don't suffer from any decline in quality and are consistently terrific (and of course there are so many more titles that are on my to-read list and I haven't had the time to check out, not to talk about manga's amazing variety of offer). But the good thing about Marvel comics is the huge pool you can choose from.
So, at the moment I'm only following a few titles like Hawkeye and Ms Marvel. Plus I started Volume 5 of The Avengers and the new Thor, but I'm way behind on those and I'm not that convinced. And Black Widow, but while the art is amazing (Phil Noto!), I find the story a bit boring.
But in the past there are been terrific titles like, for example, Runaways and Young Avengers (in both cases I don't like the most recent run but I adore what came before), Alias, MJS's run of Thor and the epic-ness of Thor:God of Thunder, The Invicible Iron Man Extremis and amazing crossover events like Civil War.

/i think Marvel are pandering to their popularity/ - Well if Marvel's pandering is getting us more female representation I'm all for it, I only wish other media could be so pliant to their public. And of course they have financial reasons, it's how it works.
/so Marvel needs to not alienate the older comic fans who have stuck with them through thick and thin/ - And again if the older comic fans are chauvinists used to see half-clothed heroines with their costumes painted on their body and gravity-defying breasts I can't say I care that much.

/but some marvel people don't like stuff just because it's not marvel and i find that ridiclous/ - I think getting into comics is already hard enough for some fans that most people are sticking to what's familiar at first. I'm an optimist though, give them time and they'll broaden their horizons.

with the whole sony/marvel thing, i find it strange they don't make some arrangement because im sure that they would both gain greatly from having all the characters together!! but hey, what do i know!! lol!!

of course all companins have good and bad stories and they always will. i have so many on my to-read and to-buy list still and i work in a bloody comic book shop!! :D
oh! runaways! loved it, i hope the new mini (?) is good too!

I do agree, i have never had this many female centric comics to pick from!! and it is awesome! but they need to be good too, otherwise whats the point!?!

Believe me there are alot of chauvanists out there, when the female thor came out i had to stop myself a few times so i didnt get in trouble talking to some of them!! it's the same (but nowhere near as bad) with the new fantastic four film having sue and jonny being different colours!! i mean really!! but i don't think that kind of customer really cares about female characters at all they just want their cap and wolvie!!

but some people have no intention of getting anything but marvel, which i think is a shame as there are some really really good stories out there!! and actually many of those wouldn't have happened if it wasnt for marvel and dc treating there writers/artist so badly!!

Do you think comics are hard to get into nowdays?

/but they need to be good too, otherwise whats the point!?!/ - True. And I wish they were so. Also, part of me wishes we had reached that level in which female-led comic books can afford to be mediocre.
/the new fantastic four film having sue and jonny being different colours/ - I watched the trailer and I found out that their dad is POC too. Which means Sue may have been adopted? I don't know but I find the concept really fascinating. Yay for diversity and representation. ;)
/and actually many of those wouldn't have happened if it wasnt for marvel and dc treating there writers/artist so badly/ - Agreed, they are infamous for it. *nods*
/Do you think comics are hard to get into nowdays?/ - Well, not for me because I download them* but if you are still attached to the concept of a physical comic book you also have to worry about where to go to buy what you want and how to find back issues. Most importantly, with complex universes like Marvel, finding a starting point when everything is connected to everything is difficult for newbies, or finding the order in which to read stuff. Or at least that's what several on-line friends tell me.

* = I mean, I love hardcover editions and every once in a while when there's a really juicy one I'll buy it to add it to my collection but nowadays I read everything in digital format, even books, I find it much more convenient, both money-wise than in terms of availability.
